Welcome to the World of Digital Photography!

Photography is the process of forming a permanent visible image by light or other forms of radiation on sensitive surfaces. Photography comes from the Greek words photo for light and graph for drawing, together meaning "Drawing with Light."

Index photo In 1839, Sir John Frederick William Herschel became interested in capturing images using hyposulphite of soda. Also, he was a well known astronomer who had published a book on the subject.

We also owe the word "photography" to Sir John Herschel. A man named De La Roche (1729- 1774) used a canvas to capture images of nature using a sticky substance calling his work Giphantie. The first process of photography was optical and second was chemical.

In 1826, Nicéphore Niépce, A French inventor produced the first permanent photograph which took eight hours to expose. Niépce went into partnership with Louis Daguerre, but died four year later. Louis continued experimenting using silver compounds based on a Johann Heinrich Schultz discovery in 1724 developing the daguerreotype in 1839.

Hercules Florence and William Fox Talbot contributed to the development of photography. Hercules named the process "Photographie." Talbot in 1840 invented the cyanotype process known as the "blueprint". In 1884, George Eastman developed the flexible film introducing the box camera four years later.

Today, millions of people take pictures for a hobby or career. Through pictures a moment is captured that can touch people in many ways. Pictures are used in books, magazines, newspapers, computer, posters, and on the television. Photography is a part of our culture that we see in everyday life that continues to grow.
